There are three processes we use to personalize your awards with text, logos, clipart or photos. Each has advantages and disadvantages, different logo art requirements and different production material and time costs.

Drag Engraving

For Metal Gift Items, Any Color Plaque Plates

Uses special engraving fonts or truetype hatchfilled at extra charge. Logos must be digitized.

Drag Engraving has been around the longest. The machines are computer controlled these days, but this still is the most time consuming process. A diamond tipped cutter physically cuts slightly into the engraving surface leaving a mark.

On silver, gold or brass items, the engraving is the same color as the item so legibility is not as great. But engraving directly onto gift items is timeless. Special plaque plates are frequently coated with black so when engraved, produces a contrasting gold color. Gold Brass plaque plates with lacquer coating can be oxidized to black for more contrast or left gold on gold.

Since the cutter is pencil thin, any areas to be filled in have to have a large number of tightly spaced hatch lines added which leaves a texture on the engraved areas. Photos or grayscale images are not possible but leaving more space between the hatch fill lines can make one area look lighter than another. Special engraving fonts are needed to follow the cutter path and multiline fonts are used to provide a bolder look. Truetype fonts can be used but have to be filled with many hatch lines so is much more expensive.

Any logos or clipart have to be digitized for drag engraving and take much longer to prepare and engrave. The engraving plate material is usually solid brass so this also increases the cost of engraved items.

Laser Engraving

For Acrylics, Crystal, Wood, Marble, Black or Color Plaque, Trophy or Award Plates( Not Gold, Silver)

Uses any true type fonts. Logos must be digitized.

Laser Engraving arrived about 15 years ago. It does a much better job on select items such as acrylic awards, wood, marble, crystal awards and plastic name badges and signs. It covers the area similar to a printer so can produce bold text and large filled or complex logos.

Used on special plaque plates coated with black, other colors or marble patterns enables much wider and more legible letters using any Truetype font. The laser removes the enamel, exposing the bright gold or silver metal underneath. It cannot be used on the gold or silver plaque plates. Many new items such as pens, mugs and other gift items are specially designed to use laser engraving directly on the item.

Any logos or clipart that are high resolution black and white can be laser engraved without a charge to be digitized. Low quality art will need to be digitized for a one time charge of $55. Much .eps artwork supplied these days was made for color printing with colors or shades next to each other so will need to be simplified to black and white to be usable.

Printing on Gold

Uses any true type font in any color. Art or logos can be used without digitizing if medium resolution, high resolution or line art.

Digital Printing (sublimation and laser transfer) just became a viable option within the last few years. Unlike silk screening, there are no complex setups or color separation needed so printing one or a few items with variable text is possible in full color.

For many items an attached gold, silver, copper or white metal plate is the best option. These are used for plaque and award plates and special 2" circles for award medal inserts. There is also a white thick fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) used for color printed name badges. There is a growing number of gift items and awards designed for this process available.

This is a prefect choice for photos or document reproduction directly on the plaque plate instead of just a photo with a plex cover.

Exact color matching is not possible with this process but we make every effort to match colors. The colors are burned into the special surface so they are very durable and will not easily scratch or rub off. These items are for indoor use. Exposure to sun will fade the image quickly.

For large quantities of the same print, contact us for bulk pricing on many items as silkscreening or pad printing may be more economical.

Most digitally printed items will not require a set up charge depending on what is provided. Generally if you can print it in good quality on your printer, we can use it without an additional fee but it cannot be engraved on other items. If the image or logo is blurred or pixelated or extensive formatting of text is needed, an art charge will be needed to recreate the art, normally $55 for all but complex images. Consider the size of the item also. What works for a small medal may look terrible when printed large enough for a plaque plate.
If an .eps or .pdf with line art is available it will print clearer and easier to alter if needed.
